Solar battery in Valais

A battery does not earn the same everywhere: it earns the gap between what you pay for electricity and what you are paid for your surplus. In Valais, that gap is 20.6 ct.

What a kilowatt-hour is worth when kept rather than fed back

You pay the grid 28.6 ct
You are paid for your surplus − 8 ct
Difference — the real value of storage 20.6 ct

This is the most common mistake in the calculation: a stored kilowatt-hour is not worth the price of electricity. It would have been fed back and paid for. Its value is the difference between the two — and nothing else.

ElCom standard H4 household tariff, VAT included, tariff year 2026. The feed-in tariff is that of the grid operator serving the location.

What a 5 kWh battery changes in Valais

Reference household: 4'500 kWh per year, 4 kWc of panels, a 5 kWh battery capped at 600 W. Hour-by-hour simulation over the year, cell ageing included.

The 39 grid operators in the territory

It is the grid operator that buys your surplus, and it is the grid operator you notify before commissioning. The feed-in tariff changes from one operator to another, sometimes twofold within a single canton.

Grid operator Communes served Feed-in tariff
OIKEN SA 24 6.5 ct published tariff
Genedis SA 17 8 ct estimate
EnBAG Netze AG 12 8 ct estimate
RELL AG 11 8 ct estimate
Romande Energie SA 8 6.5 ct published tariff
VED Visp Energie Dienste AG 7 8 ct estimate
Sinergy Infrastructure SA 2 8.2 ct published tariff
Services Industriels de Lausanne 1 11 ct published tariff

and 31 other grid operators

Operators marked as an estimate have no feed-in tariff that we were able to record. For them we use the median of those we have verified, never the legal floor of 6 ct: a floor would flatter the calculation by inflating the gap, and therefore the case for the battery.

And if you live in Sion itself

In the city of Sion 22.55 ct
Median for the canton of Valais 20.6 ct

Sion is served by OIKEN SA. The rest of the canton is not entirely served by it, and the feed-in tariff changes with the operator — that is what moves the value of a stored kilowatt-hour from one commune to another. The table above gives the detail.

The higher your tariff, the more a battery earns: every kilowatt-hour kept is a kilowatt-hour you do not buy.

What panels produce here

From 825 kWh in Chippis up to 1'466 kWh in Arbaz, per kilowatt-peak per year. The gap comes from altitude and above all from the terrain: a valley floor loses hours of sunshine that a hillside keeps.

PVGIS hourly series for the centre of each commune: roof tilted 30° due south, system losses of 14 %, terrain shading taken into account.

What you have to do to install one

Nothing to request, but a notification to file

A battery that plugs into a socket is still subject to written notification to the grid operator before commissioning — here, OIKEN SA. This is not an authorisation to obtain: it is information to pass on. The pre-filled form ships with the battery.

600 W on delivery, without an electrician

Batteries are capped at 600 W in the factory, the limit of the Swiss plug & play regime. At that level, installation requires no professional: a domestic socket is enough and the distribution board is left untouched.

Up to 2500 W with an approved electrician

In a fixed installation, an approved electrician removes the cap, notifies the grid operator and issues the safety report. The battery then covers far more than standby appliances.
