Can the battery read your Swiss meter?

P1, infrared, clamp measurement: the three ways to give the battery your household consumption.

A battery that does not know what the house is using works blind: it charges when it can and discharges when it thinks it should. With a smart meter it knows, and it adjusts to the watt, in real time. That is the difference between a decent device and one that pays for itself.

Three ways to read a meter

1. The P1 port

A data socket found on some recent meters. The reading is direct: plug it in, exact values, no electrical work. Where the port is available, it is the option to take.

2. Infrared reading

An optical head sits on the meter’s diode and reads its pulses. No wiring, no opening of enclosures: it attaches magnetically, without tools. This is the fallback when the P1 port is missing or locked by the grid operator.

3. Clamp measurement

Current clamps fitted in the distribution board measure the current on each phase directly. It is the method that works when the meter gives nothing away at all, and the only one that requires a licensed electrician, because the work happens inside the board.

The Swiss meter estate is uneven: which model is fitted, which protocol is enabled and whether the P1 port is open depend on your grid operator, sometimes on your municipality.
